Large Printing Needs Call for an Educated Choice
The choice was clearly the Epson Stylus Pro 7600

I have two jobs at this school. I used to be a full-time teacher, but have taken on the role as supervisor of the information administration dept., because I am one of the more knowledgeable staff when it comes to IT. With just two of us in the department, and this being a school with a tight budget, time and financial resources are closely guarded.

Our printing needs are diverse, but over the years the demand for larger sized posters has increased. Previously it was just administrative staff that would make posters for announcements and information, and we’d make the posters by sticking together smaller pieces that we printed ourselves. But now more teaching staff are starting to find needs for larger posters. They use them for teaching materials and research work for presentations.

Price and Quality

Eventually, it become obvious that we needed larger printer. This would not only give us larger posters, but save us time and money from sticking together smaller paper. Sure we needed to have a printer that could print large sizes, but maintenance and reliability are also important.

I did the research myself and had two major considerations in mind, price and quality. Since the purchase price is high, I of course did some test printing. I also had Epson demonstrate how to use it so I could be sure of its features. I looked at another brand but found it too expensive and also not as high quality as the Epson Stylus Pro 7600. My budget was really very tight, so to be able to get the Epson Stylus Pro 7600 was a kind of victory for the school.

The educated choice

A large format printer was needed by Yong-Ji Junior High School for announcements and teaching materials. But as for every school, budget was tight and resources slim, making the Epson Stylus Pro 7600 the educated choice.

Simple programs and minimal training has resulted in fantastic results

Part of my job is not only used and maintain the Epson Stylus Pro 7600, but also to teach other staff how to use it. So far around 30 staff have gone through my training sessions which take about one hour each, and they’re not allowed to use it until they’ve been trained. The training is quite simple though.

We don’t use fancy programs. PrintMagic and CorelDRAW are the main software as well as PhotoImpact, Word, and PowerPoint running to Windows 98SE. The staff use digital cameras and scanners to add images, and they find that the printer itself is very user friendly. No one has had any trouble using it.

To keep costs down, staff have to print out their proposed design in small format before getting approval to print on the larger Epson Stylus Pro 7600. This system seems to work well and it keeps costs down while ensuring the best quality from the posters we print. Usually we print around 15 posters a month, and go through one roll of paper every two months.

Even though the software we have is simple, and the staff themselves are not professional designers, the results we have got from the Epson Stylus Pro 7600 have been outstanding. It’s definitely a fantastic purchase from my point of view.

For a modern junior high school in Taiwan, being able to have access to a high-quality, large format printer really helps us teach better and communicate among all staff and students.
