We were drawn to digital proofing
SHENG-WONG is a professional printing company. The company has been in operation since 1981 when I founded it myself to do mostly typesetting and color photo development and printing. I have built up a client base producing for publishers, magazines and IT companies.
In the past, we did all the applications manually, and of course efficiency was very unstable because it was manual labor. When we did photo development, separating CMYK the color for example was very unstable because of the manual operation and therefore the alignment of plates and so forth was prone to errors.
The digital revolution
Ever since we upgraded to digital, accuracy and efficiency have greatly improved. Before we went digital, our staff worked three shifts of eight hours per day. But with the increased efficiency, we can save staff costs considerably. After a while we needed a printer for our digital proofing solution. It took a year to eventually settle on the Epson Stylus Pro 10600. Originally we’d looked at the Epson Stylus Pro 9600, but then the Epson Stylus Pro 10600 came out. We finally installed it in April 2003.
Before we send the digital file for production of the film making, we sent down to the Epson Stylus Pro 10600 to do color proofing through an ORIS RIP to confirm the color matching for the final printing.
Beautiful & vivid colours
We did a lot of testing and comparison of printers because the business depends on the output from these printers. The colors of the Epson are much more beautiful and vivid than the competitor. Also, the colors produced by the Epson were more true to the original and therefore the customers are more happy with output from it.
New approach offers the efficiency and cost benefits
Most important is that the Epson can replace the old manual proofing method. Now we use it for proofing of books because we can get more pages per sheet, saving time and money. As well, it’s used for proofing magazines, catalogues, and colored boxes. We would do about one or two books a day on it, which is equal to around 200 pages of A4 side-by-side.
A reliable digital proofing solution with Epson
Productivity has grown at least 30 percent since we got the Epson Stylus Pro10600. If you compare the timeline of manual versus digital, the time saving is incredible. Using a digital proofing method, we can get a file through proofing and onto the printer within a day. Under the old manual system, that process would have taken three days at least. These days, time is one of the biggest concerns of customers and a key reason why they go to digital proofing.
The overall volume of work we can do at SHENG-WONG has increased significantly since going digital with the Epson Stylus Pro 10600. We used Epson original media, mostly Proofing Paper Semimatte and Photo Grade Semigloss Paper. The volume is very high at around three or four rolls a week.
