Expanding Home Theater Market
The home theater market is set to boom, and Epson is poised to become a key player with not only its own projectors but also its HTPS panels supplied to other manufacturers. Market forecasts by Techno Systems Research show that demand for projectors and non-CRT projection TVs will expand rapidly over the next seven years. In 2004 unit shipments are forecast to pass 4 million units, then climb steady to reach almost 11 million units in 2007.
Used
in a three-panel format that prevents color breakup, Epson's
HTPS displays are ideal not only for data projectors that
are already well entrenched in the corporate market but
also for home theater systems. Epson's HTPS panels can reproduce
colors more faithfully and vividly than other formats like
the DLP and LCOS systems. Reduced color breakup, moreover,
makes viewing sporting events - particularly those featuring
fast-moving action - easier on the eyes.
LCD
Projection TVs, which have the same optical structure
as projectors, can generate large-screen images at lower
cost than sets using large-sized LCDs or plasma displays,
and they have a big edge in terms of home market penetration.
Epson's HTPS panels are the perfect devices for home theaters.
Advanced three panel design
Epson's HTPS panels hold the key to the success in the home theater market. In its own projectors, the company employs a system using three TFT displays as light valves. Incident light is polarized and divided into red, green, and blue using a special dichroic mirror. The three streams of color are channeled separately, each to a specific panel, and a cross prism is used to recombine the colors into the original image ready for projection.
The three-panel design results in a significantly brighter, more natural picture compared to the images of single-panel systems, in which color purity is sometimes sacrificed to achieve a similar level of brightness. Epson projectors are thus able to deliver bright, crisp pictures while minimizing power consumption and noise.

Projectors using HTPS panels as light valves have three chief advantages. They have high rates of light transmission, enabling true color reproduction; they also feature excellent gray scale in dark areas by eliminating dither noise; and they enable clear displays with full contrast even in normally lit rooms. |
Prevent color breakup
The three-panel design prevents color breakup, which occurs in projectors employing a single-panel design. This occurs due to the interaction between a moving display and the motion of a viewer's eyes, and is commonly seen when subtitles of a movie changes or when a viewer is following the motion of a fast-moving ball in a sports program.
