The scanner has received incorrect commands from your scanning software. When this error occurs, try to rescan the document. The scanner returns to normal when it receives correct commands. Normally you do not need to reset the scanner when this type of error occurs.

Interface Error / Fatal Error: Red Light Flashing
The interface setup is wrong or the scanner is not properly connected to the computer. When this error occurs, unplug the scanner and USB connector, and then plug them back in. If connected to a hub, attach directly to the computer port.

This type of error indicates one or the following problems:
Make sure the power cord is connected to the scanner and plugged into an electrical outlet. Also try a different plug socket.

Fluorescent Lamp Does Not Come On

If the scanner does not receive any commands after 15 minutes, it turns off the lamp. The lamp will turn back on when you scan.

To assign an application to the button:
Double-click the Scanners and Cameras icon in Control Panel.
In the Scanners and Cameras Properties dialog box, select your scanner from the installed scanners and cameras list. Click Properties, and then select the Events tab.
Select a desired button from the Scanner events list and then select the check box of the desired application in the Send to this application list; clear the rest of the check boxes.
Click Apply and then OK. When you press the Start, Copy, or Scan button, Epson TWAIN's dialog box opens or scanning starts and the scanned image is automatically sent to the application.
Note:

Undesired Application is Launched When the Button is Pressed
Make sure that you have assigned Epson SMART PANEL for Scanner to the button in the Epson Perfection 1240 Properties dialog box.
To assign an application to the button:
1) Double-click the Scanners and Cameras icon in Control Panel.
2) In the Scanners and Cameras Properties dialog box, select your scanner from the installed scanners and cameras list. Click Properties, and then select the Events tab. (See illustration)
3) Select a desired button from the Scanner events list and then select the check box of the desired application in the Send to this application list; clear the rest of the check boxes. (See illustration)

Select the Unsharp Mask check box on the Manual Mode window to improve image sharpness.

Note: If Pixel Depth is set to Bakck & White or Color smoothing is set to On in the Image Type dialog box, the Unsharp mask check box appears dimmed and cannot be selected..

Click the Auto Exposure Button on the Manual Mode window to automatically optimize the exposure for an image. Or adjust the Exposure setting.
To adjust the exposure setting, click the Image Controls button on the Manual Mode window to view the Image Control dialog box.
The Exposure setting lightens or darkens an image. You can select from -10 (darkest) to 20 (brightest) by moving (clicking and dragging) the slider. When the Exposure setting is changed, the Highlight value is automatically set.

Adjust your software's Gamma setting. Gamma is the difference in contrast between the light tones and dark tones of an image. Any change you make in the gamma level only affects the mid-tones of the image. To adjust the Gamma setting, click the Image Controls button on the Manual Mode window to view the Image Control dialog box. To change the gamma level of the image, move the Gamma slider left or right, or enter a value in the text box. You can enter a value between 50 and 500 for the gamma.

Poor Quality on the Edge of the Document
Position the document so that the area you want to scan is at least 5 mm from the edge guides of the document table.

Straight Lines in the Image Come Out Jagged
Make sure the document orientation is perfectly straight on the document table. Align vertical and horizontal lines with the scales at the top and side of the document table.

Scan the document at a higher resolution and view at actual pixel size (100%). Do not zoom in beyond 100%.

Image is Too Dark
Calibrate your screen following the steps below. Note: Set your monitor to 24 bit color (PC), if possible, beofre performing the calibration. For MAC’s, the monitor should be set to millions of colors
Windows 98, 2000
1) Double-click the Scanners and Cameras icon in Control Panel. The Scanners and Cameras Properties dialog box appears. Click the Properties button. Click on the start menu. (See illustration)
2) Click the Utility tab, then click the Screen Calibration Utility icon. The Screen Calibration dialog box appears. (See Properties) (See Calibration)
3) Look at the screen and move the slider to the right or left until the two shades of the gray horizontal stripes match. View the screen from a short distance. While the gray stripes do not blend perfectly well, try to adjust until the different tones match as closely as possible. The recommended value is 1.8.
4) Click OK to finish calibrating your scanner and monitor.
Macintosh
1) Click the Epson Screen Calibration icon in the Epson Scanner folder to view the Screen Calibration dialog box.
2) Look at the screen and move the slider to the right or left until the two shades of the gray horizontal stripes match. View the screen from a short distance. The gray stripes won’t blend perfectly; so, adjust until the different tones match as closely as possible. The recommended value is 1.8.
3) Click OK to finish calibrating your scanner and monitor.

Colors on Your Monitor are Different From Those in the Original Image
Check the image settings of your scanner software, especially data format (bits, pixel, color), gamma correction, and color correction. Try different combinations of these settings.

Character Recognition Problems

If the recognition rate is not satisfactory with the default settings, follow these steps to change the settings:
In the Manual mode window, make sure Text (Background Removal) is selected in the Image Type list box and OCR is selected in the Destination list box. Then click the Image Type button. The Image Type dialog box appears.
In the Image Type dialog box, select None for B/W Option, and then click OK.
Note: To save the settings you made as a group of custom settings, type a new name in the Image Type Name box, then click Save.
In the Manual mode window, click the Full Preview button. Then click the Image Controls button to display the Image Controls dialog box.
Use the Threshold slider to change the threshold value, monitoring the results of your changes in the Preview window. Adjusting the threshold value can make it easier for OCR to recognize characters.

Change the Threshold setting in the Image Control dialog box in EPSON TWAIN Manual mode window. To open the manual mode window, click Cancel during previewing and Document Type Recognition in Full Auto mode and then click the Manual Mode button.
When Text (Background Removal) is selected as the Image Type, change Text Enhancement Technology to None from the B/W Option in the Image Type dialog box.

Vertical Light Green, Pink or Blue Lines Show up in the Image While Scanning with the Film Adapter
Clean the calibration window area in your scanner and pay special attention to ensure that there is no contamination on the Film Adapter, the flat bet glass surface and the calibration windows glass area.
Any opaque contamination in the calibration window will result in inaccurate white level in the affected spot and the result will be a vertical line in the scanned image as shown here.

Lines Appear in the Image When Using the Film Adapter
If lines appear in the scanned image when the Film Adapter is used, remove the Film Adapter and clean the document table glass. Dust on the glass in the area of the Film Adapter calibration window will cause a miss-calibration of pixels in the optical head causing lines in the scanned image. If problem still remains, try removing the Film Adapter and cleaning the glass again.

Recovering from Scanner Software Installation Problems on Windows 98 and 2000

If you cancelled the plug-and play driver installation before the procedure was completed, Epson TWAIN will not be properly installed on your computer. Follow the steps below to check the installation.
Plug the interface cable into your scanner and the computer. Turn on your scanner and then turn on the computer.
Right-click the My Computer icon on your desktop, and then click Properties. Click the Device Manager tab.
If your Epson TWAIN is correctly installed, Epson Perfection 1240 should appear under Imaging Device when you click the plus (+) sign next to Imaging Device.
