Epson presents the RX-8564LC - One of the world’s smallest RTC module including 32KHz crystal
Singapore, June 15, 2005:Demand for smaller and less-power-consuming electronic devices is expected to grow as consumer electronic equipment becomes smaller. Epson's new RX-8564LC (3.6 x 2.4 x 1.2mm) meets this challenge, successfully achieving miniaturization and micro fabrication of ICs without sacrificing quality and reliability. The ultra-compact and thin RTC module RX-8564LC is one of the worlds smallest Real Time Clock modules including the 32KHz crystal available.
The new structure, created by combining Epsons original plastic molding technology with their ceramic packaging technology, is superior to purely ceramic package products on absorbing stress from board and providing high reliability against physical shocks. It also offers outstanding assembly characteristics.
Whereas in the case of most of the competitors Real Time Clocks (RTC) are usually simple ICs which require an external 32KHz Crystal as a clock to be connected, Epson goes an advanced way. All of Epsons RTC modules integrate both, the clock IC and the 32KHz crystal, in one compact package. This structure leads to a reduction of required PCB space and power consumption. Therefore, Epson RTC modules are ideal for hand-held equipment, which require a clock function, such as Mobile Phones, Digital Still Cameras, Digital Video Cameras, PDAs and other small mobile information equipment.
This new module encloses a tuning-fork-type crystal used for the ultra-compact crystal unit in ceramic package and the similar clock IC as used in the Epson 8564-series products, which makes these RTC modules software compatible to each other. Communication occurs over theIC-bus interface. Apart from alarm and timer function it features a 32.768 kHz output function. With an output-enable option, this signal can be used to drive additional ICs if necessary. The module is operable in the wide range of 1.8V to 5.5V. A mere 275nA (typ.) power consumption at 3V makes the
RX-8564LC the first choice for any battery driven application.
The new RTC module is already available for shipping in both sample and volume quantities.
