Singapore October 5 2007: Epson Toyocom Corporation, a leader in the design and manufacture of crystal-based electronic products, today announced the commercial development of a new series of programmable crystal oscillators*1 [simple packaged crystal oscillator (SPXO)] for use as clocks in office equipment, PCs, mobile devices and other general consumer electronics. The new SG-8003CE series oscillators will be the first programmable SPXOs to support low voltages and high frequencies. Volume production will begin in January 2008.
The new SG-8003CE series, which supports voltages down to 1.8V and 2.5V and frequencies up to 166 MHz, fills the low-voltage, high-frequency needs that Epson Toyocom's highly popular SG-8002 series of programmable crystal oscillators, released in 1997, could not. Moreover, the new programmable crystal oscillators not only support low voltages, they consume 50% less current than their predecessors, making them an excellent choice for a wide range of mobile devices and other equipment where low power consumption is critical.
With a package measuring just 3.2 x 2.5 mm, the SG-8003CE series also answer market needs for a smaller form factor. Epson Toyocom, committed to further package downsizing, intends to employ its QMEMS*2 technology to expand its lineup of miniature crystal device products, especially by rolling out the 2.0 x 1.6 mm NPO*3 structure already developed for SPXOs and TCXOs (temperature-compensated crystal oscillators).
SG-8000CE series and other crystal devices will be on display at the Epson Toyocom booth (No. 6E116) at CEATEC JAPAN 2007, to be held at Makuhari Messe from October 2 to 6.

Glossary
*1 Programmable crystal oscillator
A crystal oscillator whose output frequency can be set to a desired value by a program. Since they can be programmed to the desired frequency, these types of crystal oscillators offer the benefit of short lead-times and availability even in low volumes. A special programming tool is used to write frequency data to oscillators.
*2 QMEMS
QMEMS is a combination of "Quartz," a crystalline material with excellent characteristics such as high stability and high precision, and "MEMS" (micro electro mechanical system). QMEMS quartz devices are created using quartz material instead of the semiconductors used by MEMS. We perform precision microfabrication on the quartz material to offer high performance in a compact package.
*3 NPO (New Platform Oscillator) structure
An oscillator that combines a ceramic package crystal unit and an oscillator circuit in a plastic mold. Better heat stress absorption and vibration resistance give the NPO structure higher productivity in batch processing than ceramic packages.
