EPSON presents the MC-30A:
Reliable 32.768kHz Dedicated to Automotive Applications
Singapore, 25 Aug 2003 – Power consumption plays more and more a role in cars. The more digital the car, the tighter are the reserves of the battery. This leads to the need for a low power mode of the ICs, controlling functions like power windows, seat positioning, climate control, or gear recognition inside the car, just to name a few. In the normal operation mode these ICs use a clock in the MHz range. For the low power mode, where most of the functions of an IC are switched off, a second clock with 32.768kHz is required.
With the MC-30A EPSON now introduces a quartz dedicated to automotive applications. It is a variant of the MC-306, which is currently leading the market of 32.768kHz clock crystals for dashboards.
A key point of the MC-30A is the special production process. It is manufactured on a dedicated line with a tighter process control, including a much tighter inspection and testing of the products. Of course the factory is QS9000 certified.
The MC-30A comes in a plastic mold package in the dimensions 8 x 3.8 x 2.54mm max. Inside, the crystal is encapsulated in a metal cylinder, granting hermetic sealing. The 100% SMD package has a temperature extension coefficient very similar to that of standard PCBs, therefore eliminating solder cracks. Talking about temperature range, the MC-30A operates in –40 to +85°C as standard and is also available for –40 to +125°C environments.
The tuning fork crystal inside of the MC-30A has a coating layer (an EPSON patent) protecting the electrodes from shortages by particle contamination. A wide space between the crystal and the surrounding metal cylinder helps to avoid harm or even destruction of the tuning fork in case of mechanical shock or strong vibrations. Where others are still just talking about “Zero Defects”, the MC-30A will bring you a huge step closer to this goal. Actual quality figures are available on request.
The MC-30A is already available in mass production volumes.
